Daniel and James sheltering in the woods. It was snowing pretty heavily beyond the trees so we stopped for a while to get our strength up.

We've really enjoyed Mark and Louise being with us this week. We've played in the snow and have been out somewhere for a walk or a sledge every day. There have been plenty of breaks for hot chocolates and trips to the park and we'll all miss them when they've gone home.

Today we drove up to Blea Tarn, making the most of the capabilities of our borrowed Land Rover. The tarn itself was completely frozen over as was the river Brathay which we passed on the way. Having never really understood the attraction of ice skating, suddenly it all made sense to me today and had I had some skates, I would have taken them for a spin.

We've had a lot of fun today. We went sledging above the Kirkstone Pass, which was gloriously above the cloud. It was like being in an alpine resort as we sledged in fresh powder with the sun on our faces. Also, as we were still in the UK, the pound in my pocket bought a good deal more chips at lunchtime too! More photos here.

It started snowing again this afternoon so we tramped up the hill to play in it. James and Daniel enjoyed making fresh tracks. It is still snowing this evening so we're hopeful that we might get some sledging action in the morning.

Mark, Louise, James, Jennifer and Maisie have joined us for a pre-half-term holiday. Today we scaled the dizzy heights of Orrest Head with Daniel and James walking all the way. We had a picnic at the top, where we were joined by this Robin. He enjoyed a good lunch.

We've started painting where the plaster is dry enough. We will have to wait a little longer for the wall with the fireplace on as this had extensive reconstructive surgery following the birth of the flue, but there's lots to be getting on with in the rest of the room.

The Siberian blizzards are with us as forecast and we enjoyed a snowy walk through the village this morning. Daniel spent the afternoon sledging with his friend Charlie.
