Grandma Bat has been sales shopping and Bethan has a new coat. Here she is, modelling it in the winter sunshine.

We had a spin up to Caldbeck today. It's been the most beautiful day and we took the scenic route, driving up through the central lakes. We were surprised at how icy the roads are and shortly after this photo was taken got well and truly stuck. We were rescued by a very nice man called Bob and if we meet again I will buy him a beer. This is Skiddaw in all her snow-capped glory.

We've been making marmalade and it's turned out to be quite good. Yummy infact. We declared the first jar officially open at breakfast this morning.

Dan has been enjoying some playtime with James. They both had aeroplanes for Christmas and these have seen a lot of action over the weekend! As has Grandma Burgess's spare room which has become a den, and her lounge which has a tent in it. It's a good job it was a short visit as we've eaten them out of cake and scones and there isn't a dry towel in the house because we all went swimming! Time to go home!

chocolate log15th January posted by hannah

We're enjoying an unplanned visit to the south-east and have been to Chelmsford today to catch-up with Les Grand Bats. Mum made us chocolate log for tea in lieu of missed goodies over Christmas and we hoovered up the remaining Christmas chocs left by the Bangladeshi contingent.

crunch, crunch, woooaahh!13th January posted by hannah

Today we made a decent attempt to scale Kentmere Pike with Peter and Tanya. The snow was so deep in places that we were up to our knees. Towards the top, even the dry stone walls had disappeared under the snow and we nearly lost Jon entirely on the descent!

We had a long walk up into Kentmere today to hunt for icicles. We collected some monster specimens but unfortunately kept dropping them because they were so slippery! This one survived to the end of the walk despite being licked all the way by Dan.

sun and snow8th January posted by hannah

The sun has come out and made the world sparkly. I missed a cracking photo of a deer in the snow but I couldn't get my camera out quick enough. Hey Ho, Here's a picture of the beautiful day without the deer.

the school run6th January posted by hannah

School has been optional so far this week so Dan had one final fling on the slopes yesterday but has gone to school today. We can't really claim it's a 'difficult or dangerous journey'!

It's coming your way, enjoy. This is Paul on the slopes of Kentmere yesterday.

Jon spent today ski-mountaineering on the slopes of Kentmere Pike (skinning up and skiing down). Who needs the alps when you can walk from your own front door! I was green with envy and if the snow lasts much longer I may have to invest in some boots and a snowboard.

We're now into the third week of living snow! There haven't been any call outs for Jon's mountain rescue team over the festive period because people simply can't get into the hills. Today we heard that 'the struggle' - the steep road from Kirkstone Pass down into Ambleside, has become a ski run! I took this photo this afternoon, of a boarder jumping the wall at the bottom of the field at Barley Bridge.
