anything you can do...31st July posted by hannah

Bethan has mastered the zip-wire - and mighty pleased with herself she is too.

british summer30th July posted by hannah

The rivers have burst their banks and soggy holiday makers are abanding their tents. The Met office say it's all the fault of the jet stream, they had predicted a 'barbeque summer' until the jet stream got in the way. The BBC say 'people have been let down' (by the weather)? I'm just grateful that we don't live in Dhaka, where the last 24 hours have seen the worst flooding in 53 years. Homes and people simply washed away. That puts the british summer into perspective.

We've been making the most of the breaks in the rain to get out and about. This is Daniel and Rebekah on the zip-wire at Fell Foot. The met office have issued a severe weather warning for some phenominal volume of rain in the lakes tonight - it must be nearly August.

bus ride20th July posted by hannah

The summer holidays have arrived and with them a long awaited day trip on the open topped bus. We have often seen this around and about but never been onboard. Today was the day, and together with Nico, Luca and Flo, we travelled up to Rydal for a picnic.

catching-up12th July posted by hannah

Having not seen Paul and Emma for too long, we've managed to catch them twice in the last three days. On Wednesday, we broke our journey home from Skye with a walk from their holiday cottage in Glencoe. Then they dropped in at the weekend for Bed (at ours) & Breakfast (at Wilfs)!

Home to the lakes in time for Bethan's birthday. She had some lovely presents including this goldfish outfit from the 'desh. We all enjoyed the day which included an impromtu birthday tea party with Grandma Burgess, Grandpa Peter (who Bethan was amusingly just calling Peter), Mel, Charlie and a good number of McLellans.

portree8th July posted by hannah

We trotted up the Old Man of Storr yesterday. It was very atmospheric with moody, swirling cloud. It would have made an exellent setting for Mordor in the Lord of the Rings but the rocks were a bit precarious, so probably too dangerous for large numbers of rampaging Ork. We had a look at Portree on the way home. More photos here from the last four days that haven't made it to the blog.

'So throw those curtains wide! One day like this a year'd see me right!'7th July

Yesterday we took a boat trip on the Bella Jane out to Loch Coruisk to see the seals, the hills and the loch. Then we walked back round the coast to Elgol. T'was a very happy day. More pictures here.

Elgol beach in the shadow of the mighty Cuillin hills. What an amazing place. I have never visited Skye before but I knew I would love it. Suddenly, my beloved lakeland hills seem small and crowded when compared to the vastness of Scotland and the beauty of this wild place.

farewell kent, hello scotland5th July posted by hannah

After a quick repack in the lakes, we were on the road again today and heading north. It does seem a bit daft to be travelling to Skye, via Kent! but the opportunity to spend some time exploring this beautiful island with Matt and Catherine was just too good to miss. This is Eilean Donan Castle which we passed on the way to the Skye bridge.

introducing the new mrs richheimer4th July posted by hannah

We were privileged to witness the marriage of Hannah and Joshua today in Hawkhurst, Kent. They are celebrating big time on Saturday but as we can't be there, we sneaked into the the ceremony proper today. I have known Josh since he was smaller than Bethan, so it was very special to see him tie the knot - and to such a gorgeous bride.

heatwave3rd July posted by hannah

We've ditched all our plans for adventurous days out this holiday because of the glorious heat. Instead we've been mostly in the shade and the swimming pool. Incase you were wondering, this isn't a picture of the pool, it's the waterlillies at Downderry.

happy campers2nd July posted by hannah

We've had a glimpse of the summer holidays of the future as James and Daniel made their first camp in the garden at Sunnyside. Bethan and Jennifer were deemed too small for camping so it was a boys only night out. I am sure it will be the first of many happy nights under canvas.

lavender1st July posted by hannah

I love lavender, but it doesn't grow well in the north-west. It likes dry, well-drained conditions which are quite the opposite of our soggy climate, but I'm going to try some anyway. Whilst we were in the south-east this week, Daniel and I went to Downderry Lavender - for research!
