summer sundays  sunday 29th july posted by hannah

On summer sundays our church combines it's usual morning services into one short service followed by a picnic. Today we were at Fell Foot Park where Daniel spent most of the afternoon waist deep in lake Windermere.

dry day  saturday 28th july posted by hannah

Today has been a rare dry day following weeks of rain. We've been out and about in Ambleside, pottering around and spotting helicopters on their way to the windermere air show.

grandma burgess  friday 27th july posted by hannah

It'll be a week tomorrow since Peter and Yvonne left us and Jon is still bemoaning the fact that the kitchen no longer cleans itself! We have survived our first week alone reasonably well but are looking forward to the arrival of my parents on Tuesday to give us a hand.

'helping'  thursday 26th july posted by hannah

They say that you should take extra special care to involve older children in the care of newborns and that this helps to prevent any resentment building up towards the baby. What I want to know is, what about the future wrath of the baby when it grows up and sees the photographs?

This picture shows Daniel (cotton wool in hand) and Holly 'helping' to change Bethan's nappy in the boot of the car.

could do better  wednesday 25th july posted by jonathan

We went for a ride on the Millerbeck steam railway on sunday with Daniel and Hannah enjoying leaning into the corners. Since then they have both been ill. In fact since Bethan was born we've all been unwell, Daniel started it with impetigo, then we both went down with a flu-like cold, then everyone was sick and now he has ear infection. Here's looking forward to just being sleep deprived!

first bath  monday 23rd july posted by hannah

Bethan enjoyed her first bath last night - she screamed twice, once on the way in and once on the way out but overall the water was quite nice really.

"see over there..." sunday 22nd july overheard by hannah

"see over there, that's where I did my first climb and all this could be yours one day, if you marry me."

bethan saturday 21st july posted by hannah

Bethan is doing really well and we are very proud that she has exceeded her birth weight already (this is an achievement according to our health visitor), she is also terrifically good at sleeping - during the day.

travelling around  friday 20th july posted by hannah

Jon and Daniel spent a happy hour yesterday finding new ways of transporting two children with one pram.

D of E season  thursday 19th july posted by hannah

It seems to be D of E expedition time at the moment and most days this week we've seen groups of students loping past our window with very large rucksacks on their backs. Daniel wants to do the same and has taken to wearing my old school rucksack!

out to lunch  monday 16th july posted by hannah

Today has been a good food day! We had lunch at Lakeland (Bethan snoozing her way through the meal on Jon's front) and afternoon tea in the garden courtesy of my friend Isobel, who gave us a gorgeous tin of scones and jam to celebrate Bethan's arrival.

some more snaps   wednesday 11th july posted by jonathan

All her grandparents have arrived and Hannah has come home. Here are a few photos our of new, still to be named, arrival

our daughter has arrived    monday 9th july posted by jonathan

This morning at 4:08am, contrary to the normal lateness of the burgess family, our daughter was born on her due date. Both Hannah and baby are healthy, tired but doing well. Thank God that it was so much quicker than the last time.

Weighing in at 8lbs 2oz we're excited to have her with us at last.

brunch    sunday 8th july posted by hannah

Sunday morning at Wetherspoons is becoming a bit of a regular outing for us. A few years ago it would have been a more likely venue for a Saturday night but Daniel prefers a sausage sandwich to a pint so we've been going there for breakfast instead.

portholes at brockhole   saturday 7th july posted by hannah

Today Daniel took his Dad out to play in the rain at the lake district visitors centre, brockhole. We are getting good use of our waterproofs at the moment!

"we've come a long-long way together.."    friday 6th july posted by hannah

After 8 months, 4 new walls (having taken 7 down), 1 new ceiling (having taken 2 down), 4 veluxes, 2 staircases, 40 litres of paint, 87m square of insulation, 37 metres of skirting, 20 metres of architrave, 15m of curtains, 8 windows, 1 bathroom and countless gallons of tea, today we beheld the glorious sight of a genuine carpet fitter (with genuine builder's bum), fitting carpet in our bedroom!

'daddy doing?'    thursday 5th july posted by hannah

This is a familiar site in our house at the moment - whichever one of us is not with Daniel will be in action with the extendable roller somewhere!

C minus 2      wednesday 4th july posted by hannah

We are 2 days from carpet upstairs and decorating like mad - we have absolutely no idea what's going on in the world and haven't talked about anything for days other than at what stage of decoration each section of skirting/architrave/door or wall is. We are also newly expert in anything connected with sandpaper/glasspaper/polyfiller/primer/undercoat and gloss.

drilling      tuesday 3rd july posted by hannah

Having come to the end of the finances for our renovations, our builders have now begun giving us lessons so that we can finish the job ourselves! They have been here the last two weekends in their own time, teaching Jon and Daniel how to attach architrave and install fire doors.

We have been very humbled by people's generosity of both time and skill, throughout this project and assuming that our new baby continues the Burgess tradition of being fashionably late, I can say that we are within strike of being ready for it!

washing dinosaurs        monday 2nd july posted by hannah

Today we have mostly been washing dinosaurs in the puddles at Fell Foot - an excellent value for money attraction in the rain.
